19-year-old arrested in UP’s Azamgarh for allegedly promoting Al-Qaeda ideology

The Anti‑Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Uttar Pradesh Police announced on Saturday the detention of Mohammad Nabeel, a 19‑year‑old resident of the Didarganj area in Azamgarh, on suspicion of attempting to enlist young individuals as “mujahideen” and propagating the extremist views of Al‑Qaeda ideologue Anwar al‑Awlaki. Police said the suspect used encrypted messaging platforms, notably WhatsApp, to create and manage groups that promoted jihadist narratives.

According to the investigation, Nabeel operated a WhatsApp group named “La Ghalib Illallah” (There is no victor except Allah) and another called “Flames of War,” which included participants from Jammu and Kashmir as well as foreign nationals from Bangladesh, Myanmar and Saudi Arabia. Within these chats, he allegedly employed code words such as “trip,” “pen,” “juice,” and “project” to refer to jihad, knives, chemicals and operational plans, respectively, and shared literature authored by al‑Awlaki and former AQIS chief Maulana Asim Umar. Authorities also uncovered discussions on bomb‑making, videos related to explosives, and attempts to procure potassium nitrate. Intelligence inputs indicated Nabeel was planning travel to Pakistan, Turkey and Bangladesh for training and had discussed a coordinated “Ghazwa‑e‑Hind” campaign with Pakistani actors.

The case, filed under Sections 152 and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 18 and 38 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, underscores ongoing concerns about radicalisation networks operating through social media in India. Law‑enforcement officials highlighted the threat such recruitment efforts pose to national security and the importance of disrupting cross‑border extremist linkages. The arrest reflects broader efforts by Indian agencies to curb the spread of extremist ideologies and prevent potential terrorist attacks.
