Election Commission will reach out to Gen G and Gen Alpha before 2029 Lok Sabha elections, preparations to make 50 thousand ELCs

The Election Commission has launched a fresh campaign to reach out to ‘Generation G’ and ‘Gen Alpha’ ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Its objective is to enable youth and students to become aware voters and lead campaigns in the future to educate people about the electoral process. The Commission will involve students of classes 9 to 12 and college and university students in the campaign in 4,123 assembly seats across the country.

According to Election Commission officials, there are a total of 14.78 crore people in the age group of 18 to 26 years in the country. These include 7.98 crore men, 6.79 crore women and about 9,000 people of third gender. The aim of the Commission is to make the youth of this age group aware of the electoral process and democratic values.

Plan to form 50 thousand election literacy clubs

According to officials, the Commission is planning to set up a total of 50,000 Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs), 10 in each assembly constituency. Through these clubs, students and youth will be connected to the electoral process and they will be prepared to play an active role in voter awareness campaigns in future.

Under the campaign, students from classes 9 to 12 will be contacted in about 15 lakh schools. Apart from this, 70,000 colleges and 1,400 universities will also be reached. The Commission's endeavor is to develop schools and higher education institutions as effective centers of electoral literacy.

Electoral Literacy Clubs were established in the year 2018 under the Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) Programme. Their objective is to acquaint students with democratic values, electoral process and the role and functioning of the Election Commission.

In view of the rapidly changing communication system and increasing dependence on digital platforms, the Commission has redesigned the Election Literacy Clubs. Under ELC 2.0, these clubs will be developed into digitally enabled and proactive platforms.

The Commission believes that there is an increased need for sustained, systematic and direct communication with young voters and grassroots level stakeholders. Through the new campaign, instead of merely making the youth aware as voters, the emphasis will be on preparing them for electoral literacy and leadership roles in campaigns for democratic participation.
