28 from Karnataka stranded or missing in Nepal, Tibet amid flash flood

Around 50 people from Karnataka who were stranded in Nepal following the devastating flash floods in Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) returned to Bengaluru safely on Saturday (August 29). However, 24 people from the State are still reported missing.

The group included tourists from Haveri, Shivamogga and Bengaluru. They travelled from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh and arrived at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on Saturday.

Renuka Aradhya, a resident of Nelamangala who was part of the group, said that they had left for the trip on August 23. Recalling the ordeal, he noted that the situation was frightening until they reached Bengaluru safely. “We were lucky to have survived. It feels like a rebirth for us,” Mr. Aradhya added.

Meanwhile, a team of 23 doctors from various parts of Bengaluru who had travelled to Nepal are also safe. They are currently reportedly returning from Kathmandu and are expected to reach Bengaluru by Tuesday.

Mallinath Kolkundi, a 50-year-old pilgrim from Kalaburagi district who narrowly survived a flash flood along the Nepal-Tibet border, reached New Delhi on Saturday. He is expected to return to Kalaburagi soon.

Meanwhile, search and tracing efforts are continuing to locate the 24 persons.

The Karnataka government stated that it is closely monitoring the situation and is in touch with officials in the Ministry of External Affairs and Karnataka Bhavan in New Delhi to coordinate rescue efforts.

Infosys Public Services CEO Lax Gopisetty, who was in Nepal on a personal visit, has been unreachable following the devastating floods, according to the company.

The company said it was coordinating with the relevant authorities and agencies to obtain information about his whereabouts and re-establish contact with him. “We remain in close communication with the family and are providing all necessary support during this difficult time,” the company stated.

Infosys Public Services, headquartered in Bengaluru, is a subsidiary of Infosys that provides technology and digital services to public-sector organisations in the US and Canada.

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday spoke to a group of stranded people from the State, assuring them of safe transit back home.

Mr. Shivakumar also directed officials to make accommodation arrangements for all Karnataka residents arriving in New Delhi before they proceed to Bengaluru. He said that the government is coordinating efforts to ensure their safe and smooth return to the State.
