Comprehensive News & Policy Report

As many as 5,183 primary schools have been selected for the Digital Square initiative of the State government as part of its 100-day programme, Minister for General Education N. Samsudheen has said.

Digital Square is implemented by Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) to promote the use of digital technology in primary education.

It is being implemented in schools that have arranged a common digital learning space in schools and have at least two functional computers. The list of schools selected for the programme has been published by KITE.

In the first phase, schools that conveyed willingness for inclusion in the programme were considered. The maximum number of schools is in Malappuram – 814. Ernakulam with 475, Palakkad with 466, and Kannur with 463 schools follow.

KITE will provide the software package needed for computers in schools implementing the programme in the first week of September. It will then provide training to teachers in charge of Digital Square on the activities as part of the programme. The Minister has directed that the activities should be designed such that their benefits reach all students.

KITE has readied a free software-based platform for students to perform these activities so as to make learning engaging, encourage learning through play, boost creativity, self-learning, and digital literacy. The platform can be used by differently abled students, including the visually challenged.

In the next phase, all primary schools will be included in Digital Square this year itself, the Minister said.
