6 killed, 14 injured as bus rams into stationary truck in Telangana

Six people were killed and 14 others injured after a passenger bus rammed into a stationary truck in Telangana’s Suryapet district early Tuesday, with the impact mangling the front of the bus and trapping several passengers inside.

As many as 42 people were on the bus when the accident occurred around 4.45 am near Komarabanda village in Kodad mandal on National Highway-65. Of those who died, five were women, and one was a man. All victims are from Andhra Pradesh.

“Of the 14 injured, two to three people are critically injured,” K Narasimha, Superintendent of Police, Suryapet, told The Indian Express. “Five of the 14 injured suffered from head injuries. The rest have suffered fractures.” The Kodad police told The Indian Express the electric bus, operated by Evey Trans Pvt Ltd of Balanagar, Hyderabad, was travelling from Hyderabad to Vijayawada when the accident happened.

Half the truck was on the road and half on the divider,” Narasimha said. While the truck’s operators had gotten down and were standing behind the truck to alert vehicles coming their way, the bus “came hurriedly”, the police said.

The lorry was carrying iron poles. The impact mangled the front of the bus, trapping several passengers inside the vehicle. Local police, residents and commuters rushed to the spot and helped rescue those trapped. Speaking to The Indian Express, those injured in the accident said several of them were stuck inside the mangled bus for minutes before they were rescued.

“The impact was such that the bus completely lost control and we felt as if no one would rescue us. But then people from surrounding areas and the police reached the spot to rescue at least 10 people from the mangled remains of the bus,” said 28-year-old K Vamsi, who had boarded the bus from Hyderabad.

Vamsi has a fracture to his right leg. The police suspect the bus driver may have failed to notice the stationary truck in time, causing the accident. The exact cause of the accident will be known only after a detailed investigation, they said.

In a statement, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the Suryapet road accident. He directed the chief secretary to ensure that the injured “receive the best possible medical treatment”.
