AAP Leader Gurpreet Singh Shot Dead In Punjab's Ferozepur; Election-Related Dispute Suspected

AAP leader Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi was shot dead by four armed assailants in Ferozepur district, with police on Sunday linking the killing to an election-related dispute.

The four assailants, who were travelling in a car, got out in the main bazaar of Mamdot on Saturday evening and opened fire at 45-year-old Singh and Harpreet alias Happy, 22, who were travelling on a motorcycle.

Earlier reports had said the two victims were in a car.

According to sources, newly appointed AAP president of Mamdot Nagar Panchayat Vicky Maini was following Singh in a separate car when the incident took place.

Maini also came under attack but escaped unhurt, the sources said.

The injured Singh and Harpreet were taken to the Civil Hospital, where the AAP leader was declared brought dead. Harpreet was referred to a private hospital in Ludhiana for treatment.

Senior Superintendent of Police Bhupinder Singh said police had identified the accused and teams had been sent out to apprehend them.

The SSP said the killing was the result of personal enmity connected to the recent municipal council elections.

Singh's father, Balkar Singh, was a former Congress leader, while his sister-in-law was also recently elected as a member of the nagar panchayat.
