A 14-year-old girl battling for her life in a Bengaluru hospital after being attacked with a chainsaw in school knew her attacker, the Indian Express has learnt. The 21-year-old man accused of attacking her was the girl's relative and had been pursuing her for months, police sources said.
“He knew whom he was attacking. It was not a random choice,” a senior police source told The Indian Express. The girl and her friend, also 14, were both injured when the man barged into the school in Anantapur district, entered their classroom and attacked the girl.
She was moved to Manipal Hospital, where she underwent 11-hour surgery before being moved to the ICU on November 1. Her friend is being treated at a multi-speciality hospital in Anantapur. The teen is believed to have gradually stopped communicating with the man after her family intervened.
“With the girl no longer talking to him, he turned into a stalker. He used to follow her closely,” the officer said. “After the victim stopped communicating with him, he became agitated. With the assistance of a friend, he followed the victim and monitored her movements and location.” Police sources alleged that the man had been tracking the girl’s movements for days before the incident.
He allegedly bought a chainsaw in Anantapur town, with the help of a friend, four days before the attack, they told The Indian Express. The family has said it did not know why the man attacked the girl. However, police sources said their investigations suggested the family was aware of tensions between the two.
Soon after the attack, the accused man fled the blood-splattered classroom, triggering panic and chaos in the school. He was arrested after police allegedly traced him to Atmakur forest in the district. Police said they opened fire on him after he allegedly attacked a policeman with a knife.
“The accused was shot below the waist. Six rounds were fired by the police after a warning shot to the air,” a police officer said. The accused is currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Anantapur. Nikhila Henry is an Assistant Editor at The Indian Express, based in Hyderabad.
