Comprehensive News & Policy Report

The Assam police recovered a partially decomposed and headless body of a woman in Guwahati’s Beltola area on Sunday (September 6, 2026) night. The severed head was found, wrapped in a polythene bag, in the refrigerator at the apartment she had been living in since her marriage in September 2025.

Her fingers were allegedly cut off. The police identified the woman as 25-year-old Riya Talukdar, who worked in a boutique. Her cab driver husband, Ramanujan Goswami, was arrested after he surrendered to the police. The murder came to light after neighbours complained of a foul smell emanating from the flat and informed the police.

The police broke the lock, found the woman’s body on the floor, and her severed head in the refrigerator. “The murder followed a fight between the couple. The husband said that he had frequent fights with his wife and that she was in an extramarital relationship,” a police officer investigating the case said.

“He lost his temper during one such fight on September 3 and killed her,” he said, adding that a machete, the suspected murder weapon, was recovered from the apartment. The police registered a case and sent the woman’s body to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy.
