BIS raises gold hallmarking fee to ₹75 from ₹45 ahead of festive season

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued a notification raising the fee for gold hallmarking to ₹75 per 10 grams, up from the previous ₹45. The move comes as the country approaches the major festive buying season, prompting reactions from industry bodies.

Under the revised schedule, each 10‑gram unit of gold will incur a charge of ₹75, a 66.7% increase, effective from the date of the BIS circular released in early September. The decision applies nationwide across all BIS‑accredited hallmarking centres.

The All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) expressed concern, urging both the government and BIS to reconsider the hike and maintain the earlier rate until a broader stakeholder consultation is conducted. The increase could raise costs for jewellers and consumers, potentially affecting gold sales during the Diwali and wedding season.
