NewsIndia News'BJP, RSS trying to impose Hindu law on non-Hindus': Owaisi on Amit Shah's UCC push 'BJP, RSS trying to impose Hindu law on non-Hindus': Owaisi on Amit Shah's UCC push Edited by: Abhishek Mishra / TIMESOFINDIA.COM / Sep 15, 2026, 18:51 IST NEW DELHI: AIMIM supremo Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday turned to the Constitution to counter Union home minister Amit Shah's push to implement the Uniform Civil Code in all 21 NDA-ruled states by 2029.

Hyderabad MP said that the Bhartiya Janata Party is using the proposed law to target Muslims and arguing that it could undermine key constitutional protections.Speaking to the media in Bhopal, Owaisi said the proposed law would conflict with several provisions of the Constitution.“This is against Articles 25, 26, 14 and 29 of the Constitution, and you cannot implement such a law by abolishing freedom of religion,” AIMIM leader said. His remarks came a day after he attacked Union home minister Amit Shah and the BJP over their push for the UCC.Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad on Monday, Owaisi alleged that the BJP was not seeking the UCC in the interest of equality but to target India’s Muslim population."First, you need to understand that the BJP is not pursuing the UCC for the sake of equality.

They have introduced the UCC in their states and at the government level solely to target India's 18 crore Muslims; in doing so, the BJP and Amit Shah are acting in contravention of Articles 25 (Freedom of Religion), 14 (Right to Equality), 26, and 29 of the Indian Constitution.

So, one must first grasp that this move by the BJP is not about equality; it is purely to target Muslims," Owaisi told reporters. Owaisi also stressed that pluralism was central to India’s identity and cited an earlier Law Commission report on the UCC."Secondly, the very soul and spirit of this country is pluralism.

Thirdly, Amit Shah, the BJP, and the RSS are attempting to impose Hindu law upon non-Hindus. Fourthly, the Law Commission-constituted by the Modi government itself-stated in its report that the UCC is neither necessary nor desirable for India," the AIMIM chief said.Join conversation InsightfulAgreeDisagreeSkepticalConcerningPromisingWorth ReadingBig Development He further alleged that Shah, the BJP and the RSS were trying to impose Hindu law on non-Hindus.The UCC seeks to bring a common set of personal laws for all citizens, regardless of religion, covering matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption. The issue has remained a key BJP agenda, with the party pitching it as part of its wider legal and social reform programme.
