Blue t-shirt, blue jeans: Decoding Samajwadi Party student wing’s new uniform

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav introduced a distinctive dress code for the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha, the party’s student wing, unveiling a blue T‑shirt, blue jeans and a red cap during a press briefing at the party headquarters in Lucknow. Yadav framed the colour blue as a symbol of democracy, the Constitution and the Bahujan movement, while positioning the uniform as a tool for fostering equality among young members.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, and coincided with the launch of a two‑week "Chhatra Jagrukta Saptah" (student awareness week) to be conducted in educational institutions. Yadav highlighted that the blue hue has historical ties to factory and mine workers who once wore denim as a sign of protest, and he linked the new attire to contemporary youth culture, noting that jeans are now ubiquitous among the new generation.

Yadav contextualised the initiative within a broader political narrative, citing the colour’s association with Dalit leader B.R. Ambedkar and the Bahujan Samaj, and asserting that the uniform would help convey the party’s ideology to students. He also used the platform to criticize the ruling BJP over alleged misappropriation of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, framing the uniform as a statement of progressive, democratic values.
