The Central Division Cyber Crime Police have launched an investigation into a suspected cyber intrusion targeting critical government infrastructure linked to the Dam Safety Organisation and the State Project Management Unit (SPMU) of the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP).
The complaint was lodged by the Office of the Chief Engineer, Dam Safety Organisation and Nodal Officer, SPMU-DRIP, Anand Rao Circle.
According to the complaint, information received from the Chief Information Security Officer indicated that certain IP addresses associated with the SPMU-DRIP and Water Resources Development Organisation under the Dam Safety Organisation were found communicating with a suspected malicious IP address.
The suspicious network activity has raised concerns over a possible attempt to gain unauthorised access to government computer systems and confidential information.
The organisation is responsible for monitoring large dams, overseeing dam safety compliance and implementing the World Bank-assisted DRIP through the SPMU.
The police have initiated a probe to identify the person or group behind the suspicious activity and determine the purpose and extent of the attempted communication. Investigators are expected to examine network logs, IP details and other digital evidence to ascertain whether any systems were compromised or confidential information was accessed.
