Delhi girl gang-raped on bus that travelled 47 km without being stopped

A 17-year-old girl was gang-raped on a sleeper bus that travelled nearly 50km across the national capital — from Greater Noida to Kashmere Gate in Delhi — without being checked at a single police picket. The August 4 rape has renewed debate over how safe the city is for women and girls, and whether security measures mandated for all buses after the 2012 gangrape – the horrific Nirbhaya incident – have, in fact, been installed.

Police sources said two men – the bus driver, Kuldeep, and conductor, Sandeep – had been arrested. The two had taken the bus to a workshop in Surjapur in Greater Noida. They were then driving to a parking lot in North Delhi's Timarpur when they spotted the girl standing alone at Pari Chowk.

The men told the cops she signalled the bus to stop. They said they stopped the bus and persuaded her to board. She was then raped and the two men abandoned her at Kashmere Gate before taking the vehicle to Timarpur, where they were arrested.

According to DCP (North) Niharika Bhatt, the 17-year-old girl came to the Kashmere Gate police station on the night of August 4 and said she had been sexually assaulted on a bus in Noida. “Police questioned the girl and found she was going to her relative’s house in Noida, Sector 63, from Mainpuri, UP… After the assault, the bus driver and conductor left her on the Ring Road, in the jurisdiction of the Kashmere Gate police station,” she said.

“Understanding the sensitivity of the matter, and according to the new criminal laws, without going into jurisdictional issues, police at the station immediately got the victim's medical examination done and filed a case "Using CCTV cameras, the bus was traced within a few hours and both the accused were arrested.

The victim was presented before the Child Welfare Committee and on its orders, was handed over to her father. The investigation of the case is still ongoing,” said the DCP. As per transport and court-mandated safety norms, curtains or other obstructions that reduce visibility inside commercial passenger vehicles are prohibited.

When asked about this, police sources said setting up barricades along certain stretches of the Expressway and Ring Road – which they said was needed to slow traffic and search vehicles – could lead to severe traffic congestion.

Commercial passenger vehicles are required to have systems such as panic buttons and GPS tracking that should be linked to monitoring or emergency response mechanisms. The incident has raised questions over whether the mandated safety infrastructure was functional and effectively monitored.

Forensic evidence – including hair and other biological samples – have been collected. The samples will be matched with samples from the young girl to confirm she was, indeed, on board the bus. The driver and conductor have also undergone medical examinations.
