Delhi teen dies weeks after he was assaulted by truck drivers over theft suspicion

Ram Kumar, an 18‑year‑old from Kalandar Colony, succumbed to injuries after a violent encounter with two truck drivers in the Bhalswa Dairy area of Delhi. The incident, which began on the evening of August 29 when the drivers allegedly detained Kumar and four others on suspicion of cable theft, led to his hospitalization and eventual death, prompting the Delhi Police to register a case under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

According to police records, Kumar was first taken to Burari Hospital on August 30, where he was examined for bruises, a lacerated hand, a black eye and leg injuries, but no life‑threatening wounds were reported. He was discharged, returned to the same hospital on September 9 complaining of breathlessness, and was subsequently referred to BJRM Hospital and Rajan Babu TB Hospital, where he died during the night of September 9‑10. A post‑mortem was conducted on September 12, and the two drivers identified as Muntiyaz and Naeem were arrested following the filing of an FIR.

The case highlights ongoing concerns over petty theft and vigilante‑style reprisals in Delhi’s peripheral neighborhoods. Kumar’s family initially reported the assault via a police call‑record (PCR) on August 30 but did not pursue legal action until his death was reported on September 10. Authorities have formed investigative teams and are seeking additional suspects linked to the incident, underscoring the police’s commitment to addressing unlawful violence and ensuring accountability.
