From sombre to comic, the infinite range of Anant Nag

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting confirmed that Anant Nag, a stalwart of Kannada cinema, will receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the nation’s highest recognition for film artists. In a brief press interaction, Nag answered the media’s query about the accolade with characteristic humor, saying he felt “normal, was breathing, was alive” and that nothing else occupied his mind at the moment.

The announcement came shortly after Nag was conferred the Padma Bhushan earlier this year, adding to a career that spans over five decades and includes more than 50 theatrical productions in multiple languages. Notable milestones cited include his appearance at a Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy program in 2011, his role in the 2019 hit "Sarkari Hiriya Prathamika Shaale Kasargodu," and his celebrated monologue on saving government schools, which was filmed in a single take. Photographs from September 2023 show Nag with his wife Gayatri in Mangaluru, underscoring his continued public presence.

Nag’s journey began in socially conscious Hindi cinema under directors Shyam Benegal and M.S. Sathyu, before he became a mainstay of mainstream Kannada films. His collaborations with his late brother Shankar Nag, as well as with contemporary directors like Rishab Shetty and Yogaraj Bhat, have cemented his reputation as an ambassador of the Kannada language and a versatile performer. Industry peers credit his precise diction, extensive reading, and willingness to experiment as key factors that have shaped modern Kannada storytelling.
