The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has asked over six lakh property owners to pay ₹847 crore in current and pending property tax dues by September 30, Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said on Saturday. Of the 14,15,771 property owners in the city, 8,12,539 have, so far, paid their property tax without arrears.

The remaining 6,03,232 property owners owe ₹847.80 crore towards current and pending property tax, according to a press release. Under the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act, 2023, property tax for each half-year has to be paid by the end of that half-year.

Failure to do so attracts interest on the arrears from the subsequent half-year. Property owners can pay through the Corporation website, mobile application, payment links sent through WhatsApp, QR codes on property tax receipts, and the WhatsApp chatbot at 9445161913.

Payments can also be made through cheques or demand drafts at the headquarters, zonal and ward offices, or through tax collectors. Property tax is the Corporation’s main source of tax revenue and is used for infrastructure, solid waste management, street lighting, parks, road maintenance, public health, and disease prevention works, the release added.
