The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has initiated maintenance and improvement works on bridges, subways, culverts, and footbridges across the city at a total estimated cost of ₹77.07 lakh. The works covering three regions — north, central, and south — must be completed within 365 days from the date of issuance of work order.
Maintenance of bridges and structural repairs will be covered for up to five years, with retention amounts and performance guarantees required as part of the contracts, according to the GCC. Works are expected to be carried out at an estimated ₹28.90 lakh each in the north and central regions covering Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Tondiarpet and Royapuram zones, and Thiru.Vi.Ka.
Nagar, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, and Kodambakkam zones respectively. In the south region, which covers Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Adyar, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur zones, works are estimated at ₹19.27 lakh. The works are being undertaken following concerns raised by residents on social media about the condition of subways.
Many highlighted delays in completing the work on the Ambattur Railway Station subway, which began in 2023, with encroachments affecting access. Concerns about water stagnation, inadequate lighting and security at subways on Wall Tax Road and in T.
Nagar, Chetpet, Perambur, and Meenambakkam have also been flagged by many online.
