Comprehensive News & Policy Report

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday (October 26, 2026) said that while people were battling “back-breaking” inflation during the festive season, the government was preoccupied with "vote theft”. Appealing to citizens to join the INDIA bloc’s Chalo Dilli rally on November 1, Mr.

Kharge said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar should resign and the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls should be stopped immediately. “It’s festival season, but at this time you are struggling with back-breaking inflation.

Yet the government has absolutely no concern about this, because it only knows how to steal votes,” Mr. Kharge said in a video statement posted on his X handle. The Congress chief alleged that vote theft had taken place on a massive scale and was continuing.

“The constitutional right to vote of millions of Indians is in danger. For this, CEC Gyanesh Kumar is solely responsible. He has done all this on the instructions of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister,” Mr. Kharge claimed.

In a separate post on X, Mr. Kharge said the Election Commission had refused to provide information under the Right to Information Act on the software used for the SIR, citing “trade secrets”. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also responded to reports that the protests planned for the festive season had affected traders in Delhi, saying the agitation would end within 30 seconds if the CEC was removed.

“To every trader in Delhi: We love you and hear you. The Govt shut the metro, sealed our roads and locked down our capital. With a stolen vote nothing is safe - your shop, your savings, your children’s future,” Mr. Gandhi said in a post on X.

“Tell Modi to sack accused no. 4, Gyanesh Kumar and the protests will stop in 30 seconds,” he added. Mr. Gandhi’s post came after traders staged a protest in the Kashmere Gate area of Old Delhi, demanding that the Congress defer its November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan until after Deepavali.

Chamber of Trade and Industry chairman Brijesh Goyal claimed that major wholesale markets within a five-km radius of Ramlila Maidan could be affected by the rally. These include Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Khari Baoli, Naya Bazar, Chawri Bazar, Daryaganj, and Kashmere Gate.
