NewsSports NewsCricket News'I wanted to see my career out with Lancs': James Anderson reveals emotional toll of County exit 'I wanted to see my career out with Lancs': James Anderson reveals emotional toll of County exit Edited by Nitesh Dubey / TIMESOFINDIA.COM / Oct 31, 2026, 11:59 IST Sairaj Bahutule on Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav & India's defeat | IND vs NZ The 44-year-old, speaking on the BBC podcast Tailenders, revealed that he has yet to decide whether to find another county or call time on his playing career.

Despite the disappointment, Anderson said he was beginning to feel optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead."I don't know what the end looks like, but obviously I wanted to see my career out with Lancs. I don't know if my career's done, we'll have to wait and see, but it'd be nice, at some point, if someone will let me retire," Anderson said."I'm still sort of trying to process everything, and weigh up what the best way forward for me is, really."Anderson draws parallels between Lancashire and England exits Anderson's departure from Lancashire came as a surprise despite his impressive individual performances during the County Championship season.

The veteran pacer captained the side and claimed 50 wickets, although Lancashire finished second-last in Division Two.Last month, the club's new director of cricket, Paul Farbrace, informed Anderson that his contract would not be renewed for the 2027 season.

Reacting to the development, the fast bowler expressed his disappointment on Instagram, writing that "if it was up to me it wouldn't have ended like this."Anderson revealed that he had initially expected a discussion about Lancashire's performances and the team's plans for the future, rather than a conversation about his own departure."I went in for what I thought was a conversation about how the team moves forward, because obviously it wasn't a great year for the team," he said."Being captain, I thought it was sort of just a chat about that.

And then a couple of minutes in, I realised it wasn't a conversation; I was just being told that they thought the best way for the team to move forward is without me. Obviously, I was quite shocked. It was quite brief and, yeah, that was it."The decision brought back memories of his England exit, when the team management informed him nearly two years ago that he was no longer part of their plans.'Is there something fundamentally wrong with me?': Anderson opens up The veteran pacer admitted that Lancashire's decision triggered self-doubt, particularly after he had spent the previous season trying to understand how he could help the team improve.Anderson said he had regularly discussed the team's struggles with the head coach and questioned whether there was anything more he could have done in his role as captain."Last year didn't go too well for us on the field and all the way through the season, myself and the head coach are like, 'Is it something we're doing?

Could we be doing more to help the team play better?' I finished the season thinking, 'Was it something I did, but was I doing something wrong?'Join conversation "And then I get told this news and then I'm thinking that even more.

I'm thinking, 'God, this is happening again. Is there something fundamentally wrong with me as a person, as a human being?' But your head just sort of races. I just didn't really know what to make of it for a good week.

You're thinking, 'God, I'm never going to play cricket again.' All these sorts of things."Anderson also made it clear that his emotional connection with Lancashire would remain unchanged despite the circumstances of his departure."I am sad the way it ended with the club I supported as a kid but now I have thought about it I am quite excited for the future.

I am always going to support Lancashire." Get the latest Sports News and Live updates. Download the TOI app. Nitesh Dubey is a digital content producer at the Times of India with over two years of experience in sports journalism.
