Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay opened the sluice gates of the Mettur Dam in Salem district, releasing water for irrigation in the Cauvery Delta region. Vijay travelled from Chennai to Salem by special flight before reaching Mettur by road for the ceremonial release.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping exchanged a handshake as they arrived for the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.
The summit, held at the Yrys Ordo Congress Hall, is being attended by SCO members and invited leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin said Russia seeks to deepen cooperation with China in artificial intelligence and digital technologies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an instagram video statement congratulated the people of India after the country recorded 7.8% GDP growth in the first quarter of FY27, saying the figure reflected their collective strength and efforts.
Taking a swipe at the Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, Modi said, “On the other hand, within India too, there are people drowned in an abyss of despair who are trying to spread despair all around through the ‘echo of lies’(Jhoot ki Goonj).” Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, wars and conflicts around the world, India had continued to progress, he said.

Social activist Anna Hazare has been admitted to a Mumbai hospital for treatment of a viral infection and acute dehydration, his aide said on Tuesday.
Hazare was shifted to Bombay Hospital in South Mumbai on Monday from Ahilyanagar district, where he had initially been admitted to a local hospital for treatment, the aide said, as per PTI. The CBI has registered an FIR against officials of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) over irregularities in the distribution of subsidised rice for poor labourers.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Domestic Piped Natural Gas (DPNG) will get costlier in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MR) from today, September 1, after Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) announced a price hike.
Citing rising input costs, MGL has hiked the CNG prices by Rs 2 per kg and domestic DPNG by Re 1 per standard cubic metre (SCM), effective today. The revised rates stand at Rs 88 per kg for CNG and Rs 53 per SCM for DPNG.
According to MGL, the price increase was necessitated by the ongoing West Asia crisis, which has directly escalated input gas prices linked to international indices. A Queens woman stabbed two people in New York City’s Times Square on Monday before she was shot dead by police, officials said.
The woman allegedly pulled two knives from a shopping bag and attacked a 68-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman near West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue. The woman later died of her injuries, while the man is in stable condition.
