‘Just Another Country’: Bangladesh Says ‘India Fascination’ Needs To End, Seeks Reset Of Ties

Bangladesh’s foreign ministry said the country intends to overhaul its diplomatic engagement with India, calling the existing relationship under the Hasina administration “uncomfortable” and asserting that India should be treated like any other neighbour. The statement, issued by senior officials in Dhaka, signalled a shift toward a more balanced bilateral approach.

The ministry indicated that a comprehensive review of 101 existing pacts covering trade, security, water sharing and other sectors will be undertaken. No specific timeline was provided, but officials emphasized that the review will be systematic and aimed at safeguarding Bangladesh’s national interests.

Relations between the two South Asian neighbours have been marked by cooperation and periodic friction over issues such as the Teesta water dispute, border management and trade imbalances. The proposed reset could affect businesses, cross‑border commuters and regional projects, and may reshape diplomatic dynamics in South Asia.
