Mamata Banerjee booked for ‘violating High Court order’ at TMC student wing event

The Kolkata Police on Friday lodged a suo moto case against former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly violating the Calcutta High Court order in connection with the Trinamool Congress’s student wing foundation day event on Friday.

According to police, Banerjee’s supporters allegedly violated the court’s direction by blocking both flanks of Cathedral Road, where the event was held, creating a chaotic situation, disrupting traffic and also continuing the programme beyond the permitted time.

The police also lodged an FIR against the organisers of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) foundation day. The FIR against the TMC supremo was lodged based on a complaint filed by Sub-inspector Apu Baidya. On Tuesday, a single bench of the Calcutta High Court granted permission to both the TMC factions to hold separate foundation day events of TMCP, the party’s student wing, specifying that one flank of the road should not be blocked.

While the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC faction was allowed to hold the rally on Cathedral Road, Ritabrata Banerjee-led rebel faction was granted permission on Rani Rashmoni Avenue. The event was supposed to be held between noon and 3 pm on Friday.

The police alleged that Mamata entered into a criminal conspiracy with the TMCP members and provoked her supporters during the event. The complaint alleged that the crowd pushed aside the barricades and jostled with police personnel deployed for maintaining law and order.

The police have booked Banerjee under several sections, including criminal conspiracy, using force against a government worker to prevent them from doing their job, and causing hurt to another by acting rashly or negligently so as to endanger human life.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday said that the police would take action for violation of the court order. Addressing the rally on Friday, Banerjee had criticised the West Bengal police, alleging the BJP had turned it into a “monstrous entity”.

“I do not recognise this police force. The police force I worked with was humane, not inhuman. They helped people. There may have been a couple of isolated incidents, but I have seen police personnel stand their ground, suffer injuries and shed blood.
