Comprehensive News & Policy Report

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president Manickam Tagore on Thursday claimed 10 school and college students hailing from Irangamma Chathiram, a Narikuravar habitat, in Pudukkottai district were pushed from a government bus on Wednesday.

The students were injured in the incident. In a statement, he said TNCC Pudukkottai district president Bennett had visited the area and met the affected students, their families and residents. Mr. Tagore alleged government buses did not regularly stop at the locality and said the students faced humiliation and harassment while trying to board buses.

He also blamed poor coordination between government departments for the discontinuation of a dedicated vehicle service earlier arranged for the students. He urged the district administration to immediately arrange additional buses during school and college hours or restore the dedicated transport facility.

He also demanded an impartial inquiry and action under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against those responsible, besides quality medical treatment and relief for the injured students.
