The trade and industry in Coimbatore, freight forwarders, and shipping agents had a meeting with the director of the Airports Authority of India in Coimbatore on Tuesday to discuss ways to improve cargo movement from the Coimbatore International Airport.
R. Rajeshkumar, president of the Custom Broker & Shipping Agents’ Association, said the cargo facilitation committee meeting was held after six years. Air cargo movement from Coimbatore has huge potential for improvement.
Fly Dubai is ready to offer two-three chartered flights a week and is said to have sought details on export and import trade and potential. “Exports by air has huge potential and data is available. Most of it now go through Kochi, Chennai, or Bengaluru.
Similarly, imports happen through other ports. We are trying to collect those details,” he said. With huge volume of export cargo generated from Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Erode and the Nilgiris districts, the cargo potential of Coimbatore International Airport is huge.
The next meeting of the committee will be held in February to take forward measures to improve air cargo movement from here, he added.
