Minister announces welfare measures for drivers, gig and construction workers

Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced a 50% subsidy up to a maximum of ₹75,000 to 1,000 workers to purchase new electric autos, and a 50% subsidy up to a maximum of ₹30,000 to 1,000 workers to convert their existing autos to CNG systems. This is for those registered with Tamil Nadu Unorganised Drivers and Automobile Workshop Workers Welfare Board, Minister for Labour Welfare and Skill Development, J. Mohamed Farvas told the Assembly.
The Minister, presenting demand for grants for his department, also announced a provision of accidental insurance worth ₹10 lakh to gig workers registered with the Tamil Nadu platform based gig workers welfare board.
The Tamil Nadu government will establish Construction Skill Centres of Excellence in five government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) at a cost of ₹76.46 crore to provide training in modern technologies to registered construction workers of Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board. Mr.Farvas said that ‘Transit Accommodation Centres’ will be established with basic amenities in Chennai and Coimbatore at a cost of Rs.14 crore to provide safe accommodation for construction workers migrating to metropolitan areas in search of work.
A scheme called ‘Ayalagam Sellum Tamil Nadu Kattumana Vettri Karangal’ will be introduced to provide international standard skill training and foreign language training to facilitate overseas employment opportunities for 1,000 registered construction workers at a cost of ₹15.06 crore, the Minister said.
