BJP State president Nainar Nagenthran has accused the TVK government of allowing “religious politics” to enter the Tamil Nadu Assembly, alleging that the dignity and neutrality of the House were being compromised.
In a post on social media platform X, Mr. Nagenthran criticised Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar for openly identifying with a particular religion and, while occupying the Speaker’s chair, seeking reservation for a section of that religious community.
He said the Speaker’s constitutional position required him to remain above caste and religious considerations.
Mr. Nagenthran also alleged that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had, since assuming office, projected the TVK government as one that prioritised minorities.
Referring to Ministers bringing religious references into Assembly proceedings, he said that Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson had arrived with a rosary while presenting the budget, spoken about his Christian faith and quoted Bible verses in the House.
Stating that he was not questioning anyone’s personal religious beliefs, Mr. Nagenthran said bringing such beliefs into Assembly proceedings could undermine the dignity of the legislature and create an impression of favouring a particular religion.
He urged the Speaker and TVK Ministers to refrain from bringing personal caste and religious matters into the Assembly and instead uphold the neutrality and dignity of the House.
