New foundation proposed to boost heritage conservation across Karnataka through adoption

The Karnataka Tourism Department proposed the establishment of the Karnataka Heritage and Cultural Foundation (KHCF) on Tuesday to systematically conserve the State’s historical monuments, archaeological sites, museums, and cultural assets, while also promoting Karnataka’s art, culture, and heritage at the global level.

Tourism Minister K.J. George said: “A proposal has been prepared by the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage and will be placed before the State Cabinet shortly.”

As per the details shared by the Tourism Department, KHCF seeks to build on the positive response to the State’s Adopt a Monument initiative by creating a structured platform for government, private sector and the public to participate in the conservation, restoration, and infrastructure development of historical monuments.

Mr. George added: “A survey conducted across 239 taluks of Karnataka has identified nearly one lakh historical monuments and archaeological sites. Given the scale and diversity of this heritage. There is a need for a sustainable and long-term financial mechanism for their conservation.”

Through this foundation, the department also seeks to bring together CSR contributions from corporates, Non-Resident Indians, and public donations through a transparent mechanism. KHCF will also create programmes that enable younger generations to engage directly with historical monuments, art and local traditions, rather than experiencing their heritage only through textbooks.

Meanwhile, V. Ram Prasath Manohar, secretary, Tourism Department, said: “There is a need to create long-term resources for conservation of Karnataka’s heritage through a shared responsibility between the government and society. The foundation will help them maintain transparency and accountability in financial management, accounting, and auditing.”
