Omar Abdullah Hails Pahalgam Mention In BRICS Declaration, Calls It ‘Success Of Foreign Policy’

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Tuesday that the inclusion of the Pahalgam terror attack in the 2026 BRICS New Delhi Declaration marked a significant achievement for India’s foreign policy. He emphasized the reference as a concrete outcome of the summit’s diplomatic efforts and directed questions about Pakistan’s absence in the text to the central government and the Ministry of External Affairs.

The declaration, adopted unanimously at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, spans 45 pages and contains 140 points covering a wide range of global issues. Point 40 explicitly condemns the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people and labels all acts of terrorism as criminal and unjustifiable. The summit was attended by leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a separate statement, Abdullah expressed openness to a reduction in Indian military presence along the Line of Actual Control and the Line of Control, citing potential benefits for border‑area residents.

The Pahalgam incident triggered a four‑day military standoff between India and Pakistan, underscoring the volatile security environment in the region. By securing a direct mention of the attack in a multilateral document that included countries with close ties to Pakistan, Abdullah highlighted the broader diplomatic implications for India’s stance against cross‑border terrorism and its impact on the lives of citizens living near the contested borders.
