The price for a litre of curd will go up by ₹14. The price of homogenised cow milk has shot up by ₹8/litre, while homogenised toned milk has gone up by ₹9/litre. The cost of a litre of special toned milk and Shubham milk will go up by ₹12.
The price of a pouch of 500 grams of curd will go up from ₹28 to ₹36, and one kg pouch from ₹54 to ₹68. According to KMF, the price revision has been undertaken keeping in view the interests of milk-producing farmers as well as the prevailing market prices of milk and curd offered by competing brands.
At present, Karnataka has approximately 26.89 lakh dairy farmer members, of whom around 8.9 lakh farmers supply milk to co-operative societies every day. Presently, an average of ₹28.60 crore per day is paid to milk producers towards milk procurement.
Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, speaking to media persons on Saturday (October 31), defended the price hike as “unavoidable”. “The price of milk is much higher in our neighbouring States. Milk production is also coming down due to drought.
If we had not increased the price, there was a danger of farmers giving the milk they produce to other dairies. So a hike was inevitable,” he said. “Owing to drought there is a shortage of green fodder and to protect his cows, he (farmer) needs to have money, even as milk production is coming down.
So we had to hike the prices. This is a way to protect the cows,” he added.
