Readers recall influence of The Hindu on reading habits, careers and public discourse

For generations of readers, The Hindu has been more than just a morning newspaper. At a gathering of readers at the newspaper’s Hyderabad office as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of printing in Hyderabad, readers recalled how its headlines, editorials, current-affairs coverage and distinctive style of journalism had influenced their reading habits and, in some cases, their careers.

Chandupriya, a civil services aspirant, said The Hindu had been useful in preparing for the UPSC Mains examination. “The editorials help us understand the core issues behind developments and provide arguments and perspectives that could be used while framing answers,” she said.

Director of the Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE) S. Sreenivasa Murthy recalled the anticipation with which his generation waited for the newspaper to arrive every morning. Recalling one particular headline from the early 1980s, Mr.

Murthy said he had once asked his English lecturer about the meaning of a headline published during the political turmoil following the assassination of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984. His lecturer explained the wordplay and the context behind the headline.

Mr. Murthy said the experience stayed with him and illustrated how the newspaper’s headlines and language could prompt readers to look beyond the immediate news and engage more deeply with its context. M.V. Nagavender Rao, former Executive Director of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), said the newspaper’s editorials often helped him identify the underlying issues behind news developments.

He said the importance of credible journalism had become particularly evident amid growing concerns over misinformation. The newspaper’s emphasis on factual reporting was also highlighted by several readers. They said they relied on The Hindu for political news because they considered its reporting credible and less sensational.

Referring to the spread of misinformation during Operation Sindoor, readers said The Hindu had an important role in helping the public distinguish verified information from false or misleading claims. For some readers, the association with the newspaper began in childhood.

Uma Spurthi said she had been reading The Hindu since she was a child. She recalled selecting short articles from the newspaper and reading them carefully to improve her vocabulary. She also praised its news analysis and said the ‘Word of the Day’ feature had helped her build her vocabulary.
