RPP Infra’s ₹205.89-crore contract for Global Sports City in Chennai terminated

has informed the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) that it has received a communication from the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) terminating its contract for the establishment of a ‘Global Sports City’ in Chennai.

The company had been appointed as the contractor for the design, engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the Global Sports City. The contract was worth over ₹205.89 crore. In a letter dated July 31, 2026, J. Meghanatha Reddy, Member Secretary of SDAT, said that in a meeting held under the chairmanship of the Minister for Public Works and Sports Development, it was decided to restructure and redesign the Global Sports City project considering the total extent of land available, to develop a bigger, comprehensive, and all-encompassing Sports City capable of hosting future national and international-level sporting events, including events of the scale of the Asian Games.

RPP Infra Projects said the company had commenced activities pursuant to the aforesaid work order and had incurred substantial expenditure towards the project. “The company is evaluating the financial and other implications arising from the termination, including its rights and remedies under the terms of the work order/contract,” it added.

When contacted, a senior government official said the project was being re-examined. “The area is prone to flooding. We are studying it,” the official added. A person associated with the project said a proper flood proofing plan was being considered.

The plan involved raising the level of the land and channelising the water for water sports. The Global Sports City was planned on more than 80 acres in the first phase. The project included a football stadium of international standards; shooting ranges for 10-m, 25-m, and 50-m events; archery ranges; rowing and kayaking infrastructure; BMX cycling and skating arenas; multi-discipline indoor stadiums; and residential hostels for athletes.

Three sites — Semmancheri, Kuthambakkam, and Vandalur — were considered for the project, and Semmancheri was finalised. As the Semmancheri site is prone to flooding, the then Chief Secretary, Shiv Das Meena, had asked the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority to prepare a storm-water drainage plan.
