Satya Niketan building collapse: MCD razes 58 buildings, orders issued for 31 more

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) announced a large‑scale enforcement operation on Wednesday, targeting illegal construction and dangerous buildings in the wake of the recent Satya Niketan collapse. The civic body executed demolition, sealing and notice actions across all twelve zones, aiming to prevent further tragedies.

On the day of the operation, officials carried out 34 demolition actions, sealed 17 properties, ordered four demolitions and served 22 show‑cause notices for unauthorised construction along with 27 notices for sealing violations. Since the Satya Niketan incident on Sunday, the MCD has demolished a total of 58 structures, sealed 24 properties, ordered 31 demolitions and issued 57 show‑cause notices for unauthorised work and 33 for sealing. The highest number of demolitions—six—occurred in the Narela Zone, with South and Central zones each recording five, while other zones reported between two and three actions.

The crackdown follows the deadly collapse that raised concerns about building safety in Delhi. In parallel, the MCD is conducting a city‑wide survey of paying‑guest accommodations, having inspected 1,252 PG buildings that house roughly 24,000 residents. The survey, due for completion on September 10, identified 39 buildings needing minor repairs, nine requiring major work and three classified as dangerous, one of which has already been demolished. Authorities are prioritising structures that are more than five storeys with RCC frames or four storeys with load‑bearing brick walls, categorising them from “Visibly Safe” to “Visibly Vulnerable/Dangerous.”
