The survey, ordered by the MCD’s Additional Commissioner, identified three buildings as visibly dangerous and led to the suspension of three MCD engineers for dereliction of duty.
Over a three‑day period the MCD examined 1,355 PGs across Delhi. Three structures, housing a total of 69 occupants, were marked dangerous in the South Zone, the same area where the fatal collapse occurred. Additionally, 39 buildings requiring minor repairs (664 residents) and nine needing major repairs (140 residents) were listed, while 1,304 buildings deemed safe accommodated 26,917 people. Enforcement actions included the demolition of 41 illegal properties, sealing of 61 premises, issuance of 32 show‑cause notices and three demolition orders, with demolition work carried out in East, West, Central and South zones.
The inspection follows the tragedy at the Satya Niketan hostel, which claimed seven lives and prompted the court to hold civic authorities accountable for building safety. By targeting unsafe structures and illegal constructions, the MCD aims to prevent further loss of life and reassure residents of PG accommodations. The suspended officials—Assistant Engineer Ravinder Kumar, Junior Engineers Suman Saurabh and Mohit Yadav—were held responsible for failing to act against unauthorized building practices.
