At the BRICS Leaders' Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a proposal for a Seafarers' Emergency Support Network to aid maritime workers in distress. The initiative comes as Indian seafarers face heightened risks from conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea, with several fatalities reported.
PM Modi urged Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian to resolve the West Asia conflict through dialogue and stressed freedom of navigation and seafarers’ safety.
His remarks came as maritime security and the safety of Indian seafarers featured in his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier in the day.

The dialogue also covered broader BRICS collaboration and measures to protect Indian seafarers operating in West Asia.
Modi also raised the safety of Indian seafarers in the Black Sea with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the bilateral talks.
