MoRTH plans more powerful low-speed EVs without registration; industry splits over exemption
India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways released draft rules that would increase the permissible motor power for low‑speed electric vehicles to 600 W and lift the 60‑kg weight ceiling while keeping the registration exemption. The proposal has divided manufacturers, with full‑service OEM BGauss welcoming a bigger market and Yulu warning that heavier models could abuse the exemption and evade the Vahan registration system.
