California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a package of more than a dozen new laws on Thursday, including a measure that bars social‑media platforms from offering features deemed psychologically exploitative to users under 16. The legislation defines “addictive” features such as infinite scroll, algorithmic recommendations and autoplay and prohibits their use for minors.
The School Education Department had invited suggestions and objections on the draft legislation, published in Marathi and English on its official website.
The CM said the decision was taken to respect public sentiment on Parks bill and allow for a wider discussion on the legislation.
The legislation makes every offence committed under its provisions cognisable and also provides for compensation to advocates from fines recovered by courts
