Tiger sighted in Munnar tea plantation amid cattle attack concerns

Munnar Range Officer S. Biju confirmed the authenticity of a video showing a healthy tiger retreating into tea bushes after noticing a vehicle on the road linking Goodarvila Estate in Nettikkudy Division to Silent Valley. The sighting adds to a series of recent tiger encounters reported in the Pampanmala, Thenmala and Silent Valley areas of the Munnar range.

Forest officials noted that cattle attacks have been reported repeatedly across Devikulam and Munnar, and they are now providing compensation to owners of livestock killed by the big cat. The department has also directed plantation managers to ensure that all livestock are housed in secure sheds by early afternoon to reduce further incidents.

Local residents, many of whom depend on dairy farming for supplemental income, expressed concern that the loss of cows threatens their livelihoods and adds financial strain to plantation labourers. The forest department’s response aims to balance wildlife conservation with the safety and economic well‑being of the community.
