To tackle patient load, Delhi Cabinet nod for 250-bed trauma block at GTB hospital

The Delhi Cabinet gave the green light on Tuesday for a new 250‑bed super‑speciality‑cum‑trauma block at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital in Dilshad Garden, East Delhi. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted that GTB is the sole major government hospital in the area and is operating at full capacity, prompting the need for expanded trauma services for accident victims and critical emergencies.

The seven‑storey structure will occupy roughly 22,550 sq m within the existing GTB campus, eliminating the need for additional land. It will house a 72‑bed ICU, 48 specialist OPD rooms, nine operation theatres and a total of 250 beds broken down into emergency, burns ICU, general, private and isolation wards. The basement will contain a blood bank and laboratory, while the ground floor will host a round‑the‑clock emergency department equipped with CT, MRI and X‑ray facilities. The project, part of Phase‑IV of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, is a cost‑shared initiative between the central and Delhi governments, with a target completion date of 2028.

GTB Hospital currently faces chronic overcrowding, with nearly all its beds occupied, limiting its ability to serve the growing population of East Delhi. The new block aims to provide 24‑hour trauma and specialist care, including neurology, orthopaedics, dermatology and dental services, thereby reducing patient strain on existing facilities. A joint monitoring committee of senior officials from the central and Delhi governments will convene quarterly to oversee construction progress and ensure timely delivery.
