University of Kerala DSU launches digital portal to redefine student governance

The Departments Students’ Union (DSU) 2025-26 of the University of Kerala has launched its official digital portal in a move towards “governance with accountability.” The website https://kudsu.vercel.app was introduced as part of the union’s commitment to make student representation more transparent, accessible, and technology-driven.

For the first time, the union, which represents students across the 44 teaching and research departments of the university, will have a centralised digital interface to share its work, receive feedback, and coordinate welfare activities.

Eby Sanal V.S., chairperson of the DSU, said the platform was conceived to address a long-standing gap between students and their elected representatives. “Student unions have always been about service and representation.

But in 2026, that also means being present where students are — online. This website is our commitment to bring governance out of closed rooms and into the public domain. Every student, whether on campus or doing research, should know what the union is doing and how to reach us,” a statement quoting him said on Saturday.

The DSU has positioned the website around three pillars. One is commitment to students. The portal centralises all union activities — from academic support to cultural fests. Details of events such as campus fest and arts fest are also updated.

Second is technology-aided governance. Moving beyond WhatsApp groups and paper notices, the DSU has digitised key processes. The website includes an ‘anonymous complaint box’ where students can report academic, hostel, or infrastructural issues without fear of identification.

It also has a dedicated section for students to join union-run communities and clubs, enabling department-wise and interest-based networking. The union plans to use the portal for surveys, petitions, and digital campaigns.

Transparent governance is the third principle. In a first for a department-level union at the university, all representations and petitions submitted by the DSU to the Registrar, heads of departments, and university authorities will be uploaded on the site.

This includes demands related to attendance, scholarships, hostel facilities, and academic reforms. The idea, office-bearers say, is to make the union’s advocacy work visible and traceable. “If we are raising an issue, students should be able to see it.

If we get a response, they should know it too. That’s transparency,” the statement quoting a union executive member said. The portal will feature the profiles and contact of all the 2025-26 executive council members. It also hosts photos, reports, and magazines documenting union activities throughout the year.

“This is our model — a union that works with students, not just for students. Technology is only the medium. The goal is to make the union more responsive, more open, and more effective,” Mr. Eby Sanal said.
