WTC Final Race: India’s Road Ahead If Sri Lanka Test Ends In A Draw

India remain in a commanding position in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, but rain has emerged as the biggest threat to their push for another victory. Sri Lanka were 229/6 and held a 16-run lead when play ended on Day 4, leaving India needing four wickets to begin their chase.

With crucial World Test Championship points at stake, a draw would be frustrating for India and could make their road to the WTC Final even tougher.

India entered the Sri Lanka series in fifth place in the WTC standings after their victory in the first Test in Galle lifted them to a PCT of 53.33.

A draw in Colombo would mean the teams share the available points, rather than India collecting the full 12 points available for a Test victory.

The result would therefore leave India with a lower PCT than they would have had after a win, although it would not end their WTC Final hopes.

India's position will also depend on results involving the other teams in the qualification race, making every remaining point increasingly valuable.

The second Sri Lanka Test is not the end of India's WTC campaign. After Colombo, India have seven Tests remaining in the current cycle.

They will travel to New Zealand for two Tests in November, before hosting Australia for a five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series from January to March 2027.

That gives India seven opportunities to collect points, but their margin for error is already limited after the defeats suffered earlier in the cycle.

The five-Test Australia series could prove particularly important because it will come against another major contender in the WTC race.

Yes. A draw against Sri Lanka would hurt India's position, but it would not mathematically eliminate them.

The equation is becoming increasingly simple for India: win as many of the remaining Tests as possible and avoid unnecessary dropped points.

A clean sweep of their remaining seven Tests would give India the strongest possible finish. Any combination of draws or defeats would reduce their final PCT and increase their dependence on results elsewhere.

India also need to avoid disciplinary penalties such as points deductions for slow over-rates, which could further damage their percentage.

The immediate concern, however, is the weather.
