The BRICS bloc, now comprising 11 nations and representing about 40% of global GDP, will hold its 2026 summit in India. The meeting is seen as a pivotal moment for emerging economies to influence worldwide economic dynamics.
Delhi has mobilised around 25,000 security personnel, including NSG commandos and paramilitary forces, to safeguard the 18th BRICS Summit starting September 11. The operation covers the main venue, eleven hotels and 35 key routes, with extensive anti‑drone and mock‑drill preparations.
BRICS has expanded from five to eleven members with Indonesia joining, making the bloc larger and economically stronger, while internal political differences and India's import dependence pose challenges.
Women employees at the Eiffel Tower were instructed to vacate their posts during a private visit by a Hindu BAPS delegation, prompting a union‑led protest and the tower’s temporary closure. The incident sparked apologies from management, statements from French officials and a diplomatic comment from India’s foreign ministry.
The Indian government denied any involvement in the controversy surrounding the BAPS group's alleged request to restrict women employees at the Eiffel Tower, which was shut for a day following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s temple inauguration in Paris. French officials have opened an inquiry while BAPS maintains the operational changes were logistical, not gender‑based.
