ED raids Trinamool MP Nadimul Haque’s premises in Delhi, Kolkata, Ranchi

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided Trinamool Congress MP Nadimul Haque’s residence and offices at seven places in Delhi, Kolkata, and Ranchi on Monday over alleged illegal financial transactions carried out in the name of his Urdu daily, sources said.

“The agency’s Delhi team is searching the MP’s residences in the national capital and several other locations, including a Kolkata address linked to him,” an official said. Speaking to The Indian Express, TMC MP Mohammed Nadimul Haque said that he was on an official field visit in Ranchi with a Parliamentary committee on Monday when the ED raided his official residence in Delhi.

“I have been traveling with the Parliamentary committee on Government Assurances. We were in Patna yesterday and today, we were in Ranchi. I have flagged the issue of the ED raids at my official residence to the committee chairperson Dr.

M. Thambi Durai,” said Haque. The Enforcement Directorate alleges that funds belonging to the Trinamool were also involved in the transactions under investigation. According to the sources, the raids were based on a complaint filed with the Bidhannagar police commissionerate last month regarding the transactions.

It is alleged that extensive benami financial transactions were carried out through Haque’s office. In Delhi, the Rajya Sabha MP has an office at 61, South Avenue, which is primarily used as the Trinamool’s Kalighat faction’s office in the national capital.

This was among the premises raided by the central agency. A large CRPF contingent was deployed to prevent any untoward incident during the ED raids. TMC Joint National Secretary and Parliamentary Leader in Rajya Sabha O'Brien told The Indian Express that Monday’s raids at Haque’s residence in Delhi is part of a bid to distract and divert the attention of the nation from the tragedy in Delhi’s south campus.

“The ED conviction rate at 0.1 per cent or so is a joke on the nation. Monday’s raids at our MP’s residence (61, South Avenue), which also functions as our party office in Delhi, is an attempt of the government to distract the people from the tragedy in Delhi’s south campus,” said O'Brien.

He added: “Mr Haque is being targeted because he is from the Muslim community, which is being targeted by the West Bengal government.
