India News Live Updates, 12 September 2026: Chennai police detain 285 with criminal antecedents in special drive

Chennai police detained 285 people with criminal antecedents and history-sheeters during a special drive conducted across the city between September 10 and 11, officials said. Of those apprehended, 152 were remanded to judicial custody, while the remaining individuals were released with strict warnings after interrogation.

One-year-old twin brothers died purportedly after ingesting a chemical suspected to be pesticide that had spilled onto the kitchen floor at their home in Adimali, police said. Both were rushed to a private hospital after they developed serious health complications on Friday night, but died around 10 pm.

Police later recovered bottles of pesticide and paint thinner from the kitchen. A youth was rescued after being trapped in an elevator for over an hour following a power outage at Vadakkencherry in Palakkad district. He was a native of Kizhakkencherry, got stuck inside the lift after going to gym on the top floor of the building.

Though people at the gym tried to open the elevator, they were unable to do so. Even after power was restored around 9 pm, the lift remained dysfunctional. Fire personnel reached the spot and opened the elevator using hydraulic equipment, rescuing the trapped person.

Five people were killed after a car collided head-on with a truck in Assam’s Sonitpur district on Saturday, police said. The accident occurred near a petrol pump in the Balipara area under Rangapara police station limits.

All five victims were occupants of the car, a senior police officer said. The deceased were identified as Har Gobinda Hajoari, Nayan Swargiary, Pappu Bora, Pranjal Bania and Sanjay Mech, all residents of Ghoramari Batabari in the district.

The truck driver fled the spot after the collision, police said. A 14-year-old boy was killed and four others were injured after a landslide triggered by heavy rain hit Vairengte town in Mizoram’s Kolasib district early Saturday, police said.

Kolasib Superintendent of Police Lalrinpuia Varte said the incident occurred around 4:30 am near the Mizoram-Assam border. The boy, identified as Zodingliana, died at the spot and his body was recovered from the debris by police and local volunteers.

Two of the injured were taken to Silchar in Assam, while two others were admitted to the Vairengte Community Health Centre. The landslide destroyed two houses, including a double-storey timber residence, and another Assam-type house.

The structures were occupied by three families comprising 17 people. Haryana Police has brought back 27 gangsters from abroad through deportation or extradition, with 21 of them returning since 2025, Director General of Police Ajay Singhal said on Saturday.

Singhal said the Special Task Force (STF) had intensified its crackdown on organised crime and was targeting wanted criminals hiding abroad and their networks. Of the 27 gangsters brought back, seven were deported or extradited in 2025 and 14 so far this year.

STF Inspector General Satish Balan said the agency was using human and technical intelligence, along with fake passport records, identities and biometric data, to trace criminals hiding overseas. Police have also facilitated the detention of 12 gangsters abroad, with their extradition or deportation process underway.

Since August 2023, Haryana Police has issued 144 Look-Out Circulars, 54 Red Corner Notices and 53 Interpol references. It has also revoked 93 passports and sent nine provisional arrest requests and 16 extradition requests.

The STF is also tracking bank transactions and cryptocurrency and USDT channels linked to criminal networks. Haryana Police has established coordination with police forces in Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh to track and arrest wanted criminals.

Three policemen suffered serious injuries after a man arrested with MDMA allegedly attacked them at Maradu police station in Kochi on Friday night. The injured officials were Civil Police Officer Fasal PM, Assistant Sub Inspector Sumeshkumar K and Sub Inspector Jackson K.

Fasal suffered fractures to his right hand, while Sumeshkumar sustained a dislocated elbow and Jackson suffered a severe neck injury.
