Kerala HC raps authorities over road safety failures, reckless driving by heavy vehicles

The Kerala High Court has openly criticised the state government and traffic officials for failing to upgrade roads, footpaths and curb irresponsible driving by heavy vehicles. An amicus curiae highlighted that private buses and other large vehicles are using public roads recklessly, endangering all users, and the court cited a recent incident where a private bus employee allegedly confronted travelers in a car, prompting police action.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) informed the bench that the police will launch regular awareness campaigns aimed at reducing traffic incidents, particularly those involving heavy vehicles. Authorities will subject private bus drivers and staff to thorough police verification and will issue character certificates where appropriate. The court noted that despite prior assurances, safety measures at zebra crossings, pedestrian zones and densely populated areas remain inadequate.

The ruling underscores the broader concern for commuter safety in Kerala’s urban centres, where heavy vehicles frequently share congested streets with pedestrians. By mandating stricter driver vetting and heightened enforcement, the court aims to protect daily travelers and restore confidence in public transport safety standards.
