Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh revealed on Tuesday that the state will introduce a fleet of mini air‑conditioned buses to serve areas up to five kilometres from each Namma Metro station. The announcement came after a meeting with senior officials from the Transport Department, KSRTC and BMTC at Vidhana Soudha.
Under the central government’s PM E‑DRIVE programme, 4,500 electric buses are being supplied to BMTC, of which 200 will be earmarked as mini AC buses for last‑mile connectivity. The buses will link distant residential pockets to metro hubs, while BMTC will also increase air‑conditioned services for IT and BT firms. Additionally, the ‘Namma BMTC Mobile App 2.0’ will be rolled out to integrate information for passengers using platforms such as Ola and Uber, and steps have been ordered to curb revenue leakage in state transport bodies.
The initiative aims to alleviate Bengaluru’s chronic traffic congestion by offering a reliable public‑transport alternative for commuters, especially those traveling to and from workplaces in the technology sector. By improving first‑ and last‑mile links, the government expects a shift away from private vehicle use, benefiting daily commuters, corporate employees, and the broader urban mobility ecosystem.
