Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple kumbabishekam begins

The Hindu National reported that the sacred Kumbhabhishekam of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai was inaugurated in the early hours of Thursday, September 17, 2026. Senior priests from various temples performed the opening rites, while a host of dignitaries—ranging from Tamil Nadu cabinet ministers and High Court judges to MPs, MLAs, and senior government officers—were present to witness the ceremony.

The ritual commenced with Vedic hymns and special pujas, and the consecration of the temple’s gopurams was slated between 7:40 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. VIPs began arriving as early as 4 a.m., and the HR&CE department arranged dedicated seating on the upper deck for their viewing. Thousands of pilgrims queued outside the complex, which was illuminated with extensive lighting, while the Madurai Corporation issued notices to nearby property owners prohibiting climbing onto buildings to watch the proceedings.
