Mumbai on ‘orange’ alert as IMD warns of heavy rain in parts of Maharashtra

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) kept Mumbai on an orange weather alert on Sunday, September 13, 2026, after issuing a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations within the city. The alert was issued alongside warnings for multiple districts in Maharashtra, where the IMD warned of heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning until the morning of September 14.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai projected that heavy to very heavy rain was very likely on September 13, with the intensity easing to moderate rain on September 14, light to moderate rain on September 15‑16, and light rain on September 17. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recorded a high tide of 4.46 metres at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday, followed by a low tide of 0.44 metres at 7:13 p.m.; the next high tide was expected to reach 4.43 metres at 1:38 a.m. on Monday, with a low tide of 1.21 metres at 7:17 a.m. In the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Thane was forecast to receive heavy to very heavy rain at isolated spots, Raigad isolated heavy rain, and Palghar thunderstorms with heavy to extremely heavy rain. Other districts such as Nandurbar, Nashik, Dhule, Jalgaon, Pune ghats, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Jalna also faced warnings for heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds up to 40‑50 km/h.

These alerts come as Maharashtra continues to experience the peak of its monsoon season, raising concerns over urban flooding, traffic disruptions and potential damage to infrastructure. The BMC has urged residents to stay alert, avoid low‑lying areas, and follow safety advisories, while emergency services remain on standby to respond to any flood‑related incidents. The IMD indicated that the overall intensity of the weather system is expected to diminish significantly after Monday across most parts of the state.
