Comprehensive News & Policy Report

The wait to access the second cab pick-up point at Chennai airport grows even longer as it is set to miss the August deadline too. Though the facility is ready and has received approval, it is likely to get inaugurated only in September this year.

AAI officials said, since the top brass from the Ministry of Civil Aviation will inaugurate the event, planning needs to be done and hence the opening has been pushed to September. “It definitely won’t get delayed beyond September,” an official said.

Sources said that the AAI officials from New Delhi also want all the issues that passengers have been facing at Chennai airport to be resolved before the ministry officials come to inaugurate the event. The delay to open this boarding point has been one of the biggest complaints of air passengers in recent times.

When the plaza is made ready, passengers from the T1 Terminal — which handles the majority of the domestic passengers — will find the cab boarding point accessible.

After this is done, AAI plans to shift the buggy vehicles from the T1 Terminal, and augment the number of such vehicles to the T2 International Terminal and T4 Domestic Terminal.

“A small portion of the pathway from the T4 Domestic Terminal to the multi-level car parking facility still remains open to the sky and we will cover them so that passengers don’t get drenched in rain. This work too is going to be expedited and completed soon. Those who wish to take the buggy from the T4 Terminal will have it and the pathway too will be fully accessible,” an official said.
