She raised her brother’s children as her own. He killed her for Rs 50 lakh in Delhi’s Burari

Delhi police disclosed that Anita Kumar, a 45‑year‑old domestic worker, was discovered dead in the early hours of 5 am on a recent morning in a ground‑floor room of her Burari residence, with her throat slit. Investigators quickly shifted focus from her husband Girdhari Lal, a mason, to Anita’s own husband, Kamal Kumar, 51, who confessed to the killing and indicated it was driven by a desire to claim insurance benefits.

The incident occurred in a slum cluster of North Delhi’s Burari area. Anita and Kamal had been married for a second time after Kamal’s first wife, also named Anita, died in 2015. Both Anita and Girdhari had taken out life‑insurance policies in 2016, each valued at Rs 50 lakh, naming Kamal as the nominee. Following the murder, police recovered no weapon at the scene and noted that Kamal had previously moved to a separate house with his second wife Anjani and her three children, a shift that had intensified tensions with his sister‑in‑law.

Anjani, a 44‑year‑old former house help, had three teenage children from a prior marriage and was reportedly close to Kamal’s two sons from his first marriage, who had regarded her as a mother figure. Anita had bequeathed her savings and a second house to Kamal and his eldest son Surya Kant, further intertwining the families’ financial interests. The case underscores the complexities of blended families and the potential for financial motives to fuel violent crime in urban Delhi.
