Sri Sathya Sai village launches community surveillance to enhance security, combat crime

Gunduvaripalli, a tiny village in Talupula mandal of Sri Sathya Sai district, has become a blueprint for modern rural surveillance, calling for wider community policing.

With the rural pockets getting increasingly connected to major State and national highways, coupled with bustling village markets and weekly shandies, security issues have now emerged in these once quiet spaces. According to the police, growing incidents of temple thefts, house burglaries, disturbances during festivities, and a rising crime rate has been reported of late.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police (SP) S. Satish Kumar, who recently visited the village as part of the regular inspections, got the idea of ‘visual monitoring’ and directed the Talupula police to implement an action plan immediately.

The field staff then organised a village-wide gathering at Gunduvaripalli to pitch the idea of continuous visual monitoring. The action plan involved the strategic placement of cameras at key entry and exit points, school zones, and junctions, which would help to closely monitor potential offenders and expedite investigations in case of emergencies.

The public response has been amazing, said the SP. Inspired by the initiative, a local youth came forward to fund the entire camera network as a gift to his birthplace. Within a week, high-definition cameras were set up to scan Gunduvaripalli’s streets.

“Public discipline seems to have dawned upon this village overnight,” a village elder informed the police.

Mr. Satish Kumar said that the success of visual monitoring in Gunduvaripalli would not only help catch criminals, but the continuous recording would also psychologically deter anti-social elements from committing crimes at free will. With wide coverage of the rural side now available, this network will also help settle disputes arising out of road accidents and local issues.

With the expansion of road networks and buzzing commercial activity along the highways across the rural belts, this public-led model would pave the way for a sustainable future combining community spirit with modern technology, the SP said, adding that crime-free rural living with the help of digital surveillance would soon spread across the district.
